Socio-political empowerment of children & young people with gamified hybrid spaces using the example of participatory game planning

Double AI benefit: Gamification and work simplification

The participation of children and young people in planning processes is a challenge for administrative actors: the diversity of the target group, a lack of formats and structures and the time-consuming evaluation of non-technical statements currently make high-quality implementation difficult.

On the other hand, there is an awareness that today's cities are being planned for the generations of tomorrow - it is therefore important to involve them at an early stage in the sense of a "child-friendly municipality" and to take their often digital living environments into account.

These considerations are also reflected in three research questions:

Berlin-Pankow as a test partner

A new digital platform will use the example of the Berlin-Pankow district to collect AI-based suggestions and ideas from young people and make them usable: To this end, we are adopting the challenge format familiar from social media, which can be carried out in class as an interview or top 3 ranking followed by a discussion, for example. Using a web application, children and young people are involved in hybrid municipal planning processes right from the start.

From video web interview to idea documentation for the administration

To this end, 3pc is developing its own VideoWebApp with which children and young people can playfully record interviews, rankings or other exchange formats on urban planning in class or in youth social work groups. 3pc's use in protected spaces facilitates the ethical and data protection-compliant use of the app, which is particularly important in the youth sector.

In a next step, the administration will use GenKI methods to analyse the video interviews. The aim is to automatically analyse and document the interview responses.

Finally, in the last phase of the project, a utilisation model will be developed to make the application from the pilot phase with the Berlin-Pankow district office generally usable - probably as a cloud-based solution (Software as a Service, SaaS).
