Educate, raise awareness, empower: videos for the "period." app

The menstrual cycle - what does it actually involve and how does it work? What symptoms can occur in connection with menstruation and when should I seek medical advice?
In the innovation fund project MeMäF of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, 3000 girls and young women receive the project app "period.". The aim of the project is to alleviate menstrual pain and to identify and treat women with an increased risk of endometriosis at an early stage. We created seven animated and eleven real videos for the project app - from the scripts and graphics to the animation and recording of the videos through to post-production.

Two goals with one app

Menstrual pain is part of everyday life for many women. However, very severe pain is by no means "normal". They can be early symptoms of endometriosis: a disease that is often diagnosed late.
The "period." project app provides information about the menstrual cycle, the treatment of menstrual pain and other accompanying symptoms. It also offers practical instructions for self-help and a cycle diary.

Our mission: Helping people to help themselves

We were commissioned to design and realise seven animated and eleven live-action videos that inform 16 to 24-year-old users of the smartphone app about everything they need to know about the menstrual cycle and offer practical instructions for self-help - such as massage and yoga exercises.

Common line as a guideline

At the beginning of the project, we held a conceptualisation workshop together with the Charité managers to develop the style, form and setting of the explanatory videos and agreed on a common approach as to how and with what tonality and attitude we would address the target group. The ideas developed here served as a basis and guideline for all further steps and repeatedly provided orientation for those involved - including in the development of the app's graphic language.

Real or animated? Both!

Medically accurate, yet understandable, friendly and tailored to the needs of the young and digitally savvy target group: These were the goals we had in mind when developing the videos. With this basic understanding, we developed meaningful scripts based on the medical content provided by the Charité that optimally capture the core and messages of the project - both in the animated and live-action films.

Sensitive topic. Sensitively communicated.

Through a thorough exchange with the experts at Charité, we ensured that details of the complex topic area corresponded to the current state of research and were communicated in a focussed manner at the same time. In order to present the topic in a way that is appropriate for the target group, concise storyboards were created in the further course of the project. They served as a template and "roadmap" for the subsequent animation. The coordination of the motifs, the creation of graphic elements and the development of the characters, a concept for the setting, the selection of the right music and the planning of the voiceovers were also important steps before the subsequent realisation.

Ideas in motion

Both our animation and film teams were then deployed to bring the previously developed ideas to life: The animated videos created focus on a good and comprehensibly illustrated narrative structure. They utilise the power of visual and auditory elements to convey the messages of the project in a clear and appealing way. The live-action videos produced by our film team are particularly convincing with authentic images and are therefore particularly suitable for communicating the content of the project clearly and appropriately - sensitively and sensitively in line with the content.

A social mission

Endometriosis is a very common but often unrecognised and underestimated chronic disease. Our explanatory videos help to recognise symptoms and show possible treatment options for severe menstrual pain. We are very pleased to be able to contribute to the health of those affected with our work.

Projects with purpose

For over 30 years, we have been working with remarkable institutions from the education, science, culture, administration or business sectors.

All our projects are based on common features: their demand for a high standard of editorial quality, their complexity and the fact that they are part of a greater societal change.

Throughout our work, an innovative and strategic outlook is key. At the same time, we have the highest demands on usability, design and the underlying technology of our work. All of these components must prove sustainable in the long term.

The projects that move us are socially relevant, they matter. At the same time, they enable and inspire us to try out new ideas and concepts.

In all contexts, we value a comprehensive understanding of the diverse organizational cultures of our clients. We know how to support employees in change processes and how to moderate cultural change.

We see consulting as a joint process in which we use co-creative elements as effective and active forms of collaboration. Our aim is to involve all relevant stakeholders in finding solutions in order to achieve an optimal result that will be accepted in the long term.

Awards

Our work has received many awards. We work on projects with journalistic standards and high benchmarks for design and usability. Thanks to these criteria, 3pc was awarded the Grimme Online Award as well as other prizes.

"In a world permanently surrounded by media and technical evolution our perception is changing, user interfaces - the interfaces between human and machine - play a key role. This is where the future is negotiated and where we help shape it.“
