Sammlung Goetz

Invitation to an art exploration tour

Collecting, researching and documenting, exhibiting works and inspiring enthusiasm for them: the Sammlung Goetz, created from the collection of a passionate collector, offers the public access to contemporary art. Back in 2020, we translated the tangible passion, knowledge and special atmosphere of the exhibition spaces into digital form and have now further developed it online with a special focus on the collection.

Art brought to life digitally

The Sammlung Goetz, opened in 1993 by Ingvild Goetz in Munich-Oberföhring as a private collection, is today one of the internationally renowned state institutions for contemporary art. Its holdings comprise more than 5,500 exhibits: from paintings, sculptures, films, videos and installations to an extensive photography section, more than 1,000 works on paper and media art. Openness, transparency and internationality characterise not only the collection itself, but also its digital presence.

With the modern TYPO3 website, the museum space has been extended into the digital realm. The main building, which is in need of renovation, is currently closed. A small exhibition space in the centre of Munich provides insights into the collection in curated temporary exhibitions, while the special architecture of the original exhibition rooms can still be experienced virtually.

At the same time, the exhibits now take centre stage on the website: prominently linked on the homepage, the online collection invites visitors to explore its diversity and discover the background to artists, collections of works and themes.

Wander freely or head straight for your destination

Users can navigate intuitively through the collection or conduct targeted research. The new start page of the Collection Online combines both options: Clickable image thumbnails allow for free exploration, while a differentiated search with suggestions and keywords supports targeted research.

The navigation, which can be opened via a burger menu, provides clear orientation without forcing itself into the foreground. Curated introductions to individual exhibitions create context and arouse curiosity about the unknown.

The work, artist and album pages have also been functionally expanded. Links and filters invite you to navigate through albums, art genres and series or to compile works by different artists into a common theme using keywords. Short texts help with categorisation, while references and previews of related works open up new perspectives.

Digital space as a work in progress

The online collection remains a work in progress. Not only is the real collection constantly growing through new productions and the acquisition of further works. The connected collection database is also being continuously expanded in order to gradually make the entire spectrum of the Goetz Collection virtually accessible.

Step by step, a digital space is being created that not only archives, but also invites exploration - and constantly revitalises the view of contemporary art.
