Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung – BfR

Health protection as a website for the BfR

Research and assessment of health risks, advising political decision-makers, promoting an objective social discourse: The BfR communicates these and other tasks relating to health protection via a new, easy-to-maintain online presence.

Can hair dye cause cancer? Should my child use fluoride toothpaste? Are animal experiments really still necessary?

If you are looking for scientific answers on health issues, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the right place for you: the researchers there deal with current everyday issues as well as providing background information as a sound basis for political decisions. And they want to help put the often highly emotional social debates surrounding health risks and health promotion on a more objective footing.

Customised technical implementation

The technical realisation of the new TYPO3 site - the second part of the major project - was also carried out in constant coordination throughout the entire relaunch process.

Making work easier for editors

A central concern was to avoid multiple editorial efforts. A dataset-based workflow now facilitates work in the backend by centralising the maintenance of information. Videos, audios or podcasts are accessible via the customised media library, an interface to the external research project database ensures an efficient workflow, as does the extended TYPO3 glossary extension, which now automatically displays Latin technical terms in italics, among other things.

Thanks to our extension enhancements, scientific footnotes, including formatting and automated consecutive numbering, can be easily maintained via the editor - in the frontend they appear as a text overlay directly in the text and in parallel as a collection at the end of the text. It is now also possible to enter mathematical formulae in LaTex format via the editor. An alphabetical topic index that can be categorised via the backend allows editorially controllable alternative access to the entire website content.

Overview in the frontend

The numerous functions that can be set in the backend ensure organisation thanks to a careful front-end connection. Various news and list modules make the many different publication types - publications and orderable printed products - recognisable for visitors. Various search options developed by us are also available: as a dynamic list for daily updated content on the topic pages; via mini-search for larger topic complexes, which can then be further differentiated; or as a dynamic partial search that displays individual types of BfR publications by topic or sub-topic.

Information by newsletter

Interested parties can register for five different newsletters using customised forms. Thanks to an interface to the 3pc development e-publisher:mail, large quantities of emails can be sent - date-controlled, automated and with content assigned to different subject areas via the backend.

Migration, sophisticated security concept, support

We migrated all the content of the bilingual main and subsites in German and English, partly automatically and partly manually.
To ensure secure accessibility, we set up geo-redundant hosting and ensure its operation: the data from the main site is permanently synchronised at a second site. There is also the option of using a third hosting location.

In the coming years - until 2030 - we will also be available as a contact for further developments and support.
