"I am proud to be part of the Wahl-O-Mat team."

An interview with our designer Fabienne Mansfeld

Almost 10 million views in four weeks, and the final spurt up to the European elections has only just begun: for 21 years, we have been looking after the must-have tool for German election preparation, the Wahl-O-Mat, for the Federal Agency for Civic Education - and our design has made a decisive contribution to its success. Fabienne Mansfeld is one of the youngest members of our design team. In this interview, she explains what makes the Wahl-O-Mat special, why this election is so important and what all this has to do with the fun of working at 3pc.

Fabienne, you're in the office and have the Wahl-O-Mat for the European elections on your screen ...

(laughs) Yes, but not because I'm playing it.
3pc has been doing the designs for more than 20 years, we've also been involved in the conception and further development of the functions and have created sharepics and social media posts. And now I'm involved as a graphic designer, which is a great feeling.

It sounds like you're proud of the fact that you're helping to shape it!

Very much so. Over nine million views in just under four weeks, and everyone has used a great product that I was involved in: I have every right to be proud.

Are you going to vote on 9 June?

Yes, of course!

Why?

The election is THE chance to participate in democracy at EU level. If you don't take part, you are wasting a great opportunity.

"What's special about the Wahl-O-Mat design? That it is so plain, simple and minimalist. It doesn't distract from the complex content, there are no frills."

But isn't the EU quite far removed from our everyday lives?

What is decided there is implemented in our country - as in all EU countries. So there is already a lot happening that affects us. The EU election is about which parties have how much influence on these decisions. This means that I will also have a say in my future everyday life - I really won't miss out on that!

Apart from your work, does the Wahl-O-Mat also play a role in your free time?

Yes, of course! I enjoy it, and we chat about the theses with friends and sometimes wonder about the results. We've had some pretty heated discussions - even about political topics that aren't necessarily part of a standard bar conversation.

So a clear Wahl-O-Mat recommendation?

I can't read through all the party programmes, so yes - a clear recommendation. Here I can find the parties' positions on important issues and compare them with my own. That's when you realise that there are big differences between the parties.

Is there a lack of information?

If I imagine I was 16 and was allowed to vote in this European election for the first time: I would feel a bit left alone. In any case, the Wahl-O-Mat is a great tool right before an election.

"First of all, I think it's great that even 16-year-olds are involved, that we as young people are given an audible voice. I wish for a good future for everyone, a good coexistence ..."

How do young voters find out about politics and news?

I think it's mainly via social media. Of course, there's always the risk that everyone stays in their own bubbles.

Which political issues are important to you?

Environmental and climate protection, the war in Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East. But also the issues of flight and migration. I always mark theses on these topics as very important in the Wahl-O-Mat - they count double.

Back to your task with the Wahl-O-Mat: What do you find special about the super simple design?

Exactly that: the fact that it is so plain, simple and reduced. It doesn't distract from the complex content, there are no frills. It remains neutral - without being boring. A good combination that is self-explanatory and achieves exactly its goal.

And who are you voting for on 9 June?

First of all, I think it's great that even 16-year-olds are involved, that we as young people have a voice that can be heard. I'm voting for a party that really takes climate change seriously and takes action and brings street protests to parliament. I am voting for a party that enables upward mobility for all, fights poverty and effectively combats right-wing extremism. I want a good future for everyone, a good life together ...
Let's see which party comes closest to this according to the Wahl-O-Mat - I'm curious!
