And Action! - Between film and visual arts

The Arsenal - Institute for Film and Video Art has been established far beyond the borders of Berlin's cultural landscape for almost 50 years. Since then, the focus has always been on the border area between film and the visual arts as well as between the lively mediation of international film culture and the artistic exploration of the medium of film.
Detached from classical conventions, the research and educational centre presents its view of the international history and present of independent film. The new graphic line and the relaunch of the website were to be as bold and transgressive as the Arsenal itself.
Film art in the digital space
The collaboration between the cinema departments, Berlinale sections Forum and Forum Expanded, film distribution "arsenal distribution" and the archive are at the centre of Arsenal's educational work.
In a joint workshop with the Arsenal team and our concept developers, it became clear that the interdisciplinary structure and multi-perspective view of film and video art should also be reflected in the museum's website. Based on this, an initial relaunch concept was developed.
Inspired by the avant-garde character of the Film Institute, we developed a target group-orientated navigation structure in the subsequent wireframing phase. Internal and external cross-references were made possible by the new "Side Notes" module.

A creative design in shape and colour
The Arsenal plays a pioneering role in the contemporary reappraisal of film history against the background of current image and media cultures. We were inspired by this important function of the museum in the graphic realisation of the new website: A playful approach to classic viewing habits and the stringent adaptation of cinematic thinking was the decisive motif.
The highlight of the new website is the film database with individual usage options for Berlinale and cinema films as well as for events and exhibitions. We designed and realised this in close cooperation with the Arsenal team.
