German Museum of Technology Berlin Foundation

Experience technology -
the German Museum of Technology reinvents itself

Lively, rich in contrast and true-to-life: this is the German Museum of Technology, one of the most visited museums in Berlin and one of the leading technology museums in Europe, attracting children and families in particular, but also researchers and experts. Together with the Stiftung Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin (SDTB), we relaunched the website in terms of content, design, graphics and technology. The museum's Science Centre Spectrum is now also much more visible in the digital cosmos.

The website as a new space

... and as a central communication tool: with this conceptual goal in mind, we set about designing the architecture of the Museum of Technology's digital cosmos. As a further "space", the website should not simply copy the museum's character into the digital realm, but stand on its own, independent of the physical location.

"The digital offering is different from the analogue one. It is not a copy, but a different experience."

Dr Tiziana Zugaro, Press, Public Relations and Marketing

Witch's house, workshop, cloud chamber: the events calendar provides new clarity.

The centrepiece of the website is the multifunctional calendar. A clear and intuitive interface makes it easy to search for events. Various filters, such as dates, event types, age groups/target groups and venues help users to find the right offer.

A plug-in makes it possible to integrate and display partial lists of all events as a list on various pages. Various criteria can be set to automatically display the appropriate events. Each event has its own detail page so that it can be easily launched via social media channels. Practical for users: Individual events can be added directly to your own calendar and are linked to an ICS file.

Highlights of human history: The individual object takes centre stage

To ensure that individual objects are not lost in the permanent exhibition and receive the appreciation they deserve, collection items of particular importance are presented as highlights on the website.

Nothing is as it seems!

With over 150 experimental stations, the Science Centre Spectrum invites visitors to discover scientific phenomena, scientific backgrounds and technical operating principles in a fun way - touching is expressly encouraged! The website presents the various main topics clearly and vividly.

Reinvention: Workshops and card sorting

In workshops, we used a canvas to illuminate and cluster the target groups, developed user stories and carried out card sorting. One important aspect was the topic of accessibility in order to reach as many users as possible. We also developed concepts to better address other target groups, e.g. people with a migration background or domestic and foreign tourists, in the future.

Technology for everyone!

Visitor Services, Digital Strategy, Library, Archive, Public Relations, Collection: During the conceptualisation phase, it was not only important to bring together the various target groups, but also the different departments of the foundation.
