Goethe-Institut e. V.

Scientifically analysed: The country portals of the Goethe-Institut

Whether language courses, cultural policy or events of any kind - the Goethe-Institut is the first port of call for German language and culture worldwide. As a non-profit organisation, it promotes international discourse - in 159 institutes in 98 countries.

Language. Culture. Germany.

The Goethe-Institut website is the central tool for digital communication. In addition to platforms for language promotion and information on German courses, you will also find tips on literature, fine arts and residency programmes. The website is managed by the head office in Munich. However, the institutes abroad also play their part. They specifically take care of the maintenance of the country portals - and thus spread the discourse to all corners of the world.

Target group and web analysis worldwide

To shed light on the role of the country portals, the Goethe-Institut commissioned us to evaluate these portals in 2017. To this end, we developed a social science study design and used various methods to gather feedback from users: In online user surveys, telephone interviews, quantitative surveys and case analyses, we collected and analysed extensive data on target group structures and needs as well as on use and acceptance by employees. Of course, this included expert assessments and implications for action for the strategy development and design of the website, social media and content production.
