Hochschule Bremen

Tradition meets innovation:
Bremen University of Applied Sciences

Bremen University of Applied Sciences (HSB) has played an important role in the development of the regional economy for over 200 years. With around 8,500 students and 1,500 graduates, it not only promotes the transfer of knowledge and technology, but is also in active contact with commercial enterprises and organisations, particularly through its dual study programmes. We support the renowned university in its digital communication and have made it fit for the 21st century with our new website concept.

Information and inspiration: the website as a central means of communication

The website plays a central role in student marketing and the recruitment of new employees. The visibility of HSB's service orientation is particularly relevant in the context of increasing competition between universities. A key requirement of the new design was to position HSB as a young, cosmopolitan and inspiring university.

"The new website gives HSB a contemporary digital flagship. The diverse perspectives that characterise us as a university of applied sciences can be experienced online."

Prof Dr Karin Luckey, Rector of the HSB

From kick-off to info cosmos. We have accompanied all conceptual phases with our workshops.

Concept workshops

How can the various target groups of students, employees, cooperation partners and researchers be addressed and the relevant information communicated? To answer these questions, we organised workshops lasting several days in which the new website concept was developed with 20-30 participants using personas and paper prototyping.

Infocosmos

In general, the aim was to harmonise HSB's global communication goals with the specific information needs of users. An important method here was the Infocosmos developed by 3pc: with the help of this organisational principle, the structure of the university was divided into clear organisational units with different priorities.

"HSB is a complex organisation with many different stakeholders - both internal and external. 3pc supported us very well with the challenge of taking the different interests and perspectives into account appropriately. We particularly appreciate the 3pc team's ability to integrate new requirements into the concept and implementation, even at short notice."

Louisa Karbautzki, Project Manager Web Relaunch, HSB

Users can find information quickly - thanks to fewer subpages, no hidden content and a flat menu structure.

The focus on the offer is particularly evident in the preparation and networking of information: users can find all relevant information in one place, questions are answered early on via FAQs and the naming of reliable contact persons creates trust. Related content is used to dynamically draw users' attention to similar, suitable content based on their interests. In addition, relevant information and links are bundled via target group-specific access points.

An intelligent colour concept at university level

The new website shows that clarity and clarity do not have to be colourless: In line with HSB's corporate design, we have designed the website in a variety of colours and deliberately avoided a fixed colour categorisation. Instead, we used an intelligent colour concept that brings variety: the colour scheme of the page is based on the respective header image so that colours and image harmonise aesthetically. The associated modules are also automatically coloured so that the page has a uniform colour concept.

Thanks to the dynamic meta menu, the target group entries and quick links can be accessed from anywhere.
Everything at a glance - customised modules offer optimal orientation for the degree programmes.

Quick check of study programmes

Overall, we have significantly strengthened target group orientation through target group-specific access, modularisation and dialogue elements. For example, a new practical feature provides an overview of the topics and seminar content throughout the entire programme.

Study Step by Step

Is the degree programme right for me - and if so, what's next? We have designed a compact and clear tool especially for first-year students that provides the most important steps for studying at a glance: From the application process to the start of your studies.

"In addition to the significantly improved usability, we are delighted that our corporate design is much better emphasised on the new website. HSB is rich in perspective and diverse - we are now also expressing this directly through the new design options."

Ole Vorsprecher, Head of Communications and Marketing Department, HSB

Absolute search convenience for students and lecturers: With the high-performance headless Solr search, search results can be filtered and automatically completed as they are entered.

Optimised backend for editors

Over the years, the content on hs-bremen.de has grown immensely, which is why 3pc has created an interface between the LDAP and the course database of the Centre for Teaching and Learning. The following application areas are now available to editors: Import for research projects, use of an event management system and management of news and contacts. The following university areas on the website have been expanded in terms of both content and technology: research projects, study programmes and continuing education courses. With the help of special content elements, study programmes can be successfully displayed graphically. Since the relaunch, students have also been able to orientate themselves on the website and campus using a room finder programmed by 3pc. Thanks to a front-end login, HSB employees can obtain selected access to protected documents.
