Meet real Berliners:
Berlinische Galerie with a new online strategy

Berlin. It has always been synonymous with new beginnings. A city that has always outgrown itself or broken with things - undogmatic, stimulating and often controversial. The Berlinische Galerie epitomises this attitude and presents local artists whose work has shaped both Berlin's art history and world history. Thanks to our new online concept, the innovative museum now also shows that art does not have to stop at museum walls.

New digital strategy for the museum of the future
The Berlinische Galerie is one of the youngest museums in the capital and collects art created in Berlin from 1870 to the present day. As part of an overarching digital strategy, the relaunch plays a major role for the museum. 3pc advised the Berlinische Galerie holistically and accompanied and realised the entire relaunch process - from the online strategy and concept to the design and technical implementation in TYPO3. The website concept and design based on the new corporate design combines lively storytelling with the targeted communication of target group-specific service information.

The new website concept clarifies the relationship between information and visuality.
"On 4,600 square metres, you not only gain an insight into Berlin's art history from 1870 to the present day, but also learn about trends in the city's current art scene."

SmART! Today+ organises the museum visit
With the relaunch, we have created an experience. The website offers everything users expect before and after a visit to the museum: targeted service information, such as the Today+ feature, which summarises all the important information about a visit to the museum at a glance. With strong visual accents, we put the art centre stage in a new way and bring it to life through storytelling. And to ensure that the museum visit does not end after the museum visit, we have also integrated the Berlinische Galerie's social media channels more strongly into the website so that users are kept up to date at all times.

The digital should not set limits to art
Clear user guidance and focussed service information meet emotional, large-scale image motifs as well as texts that set the time and context. Our image concept ensures that the works of art unfold their full potential - as if we were already there. The highlights from the individual collection areas - fine art, graphics, photography, architecture and artist archives - are displayed on the page with in-depth information on the artwork and artist.
Art in focus: The Berlinische Galerie's collection area

In workshops, we worked with the Berlinische Galerie to develop the website's target group and content concept.

The visit begins in the search slot
Around half of all visitors come to the Berlinische Galerie website via a search engine. This is why we have focussed on related content in terms of content concept. This means that important, target group-specific information and touchpoints are no longer displayed exclusively via the menu path, but are also scattered centrally across the pages.

Renaissance of simplicity: TYPO3 backend makes editors' work easier
It can be that easy: TYPO3 8 brings new convenience for the editors of the Berlinische Galerie. The editors often have their hands full keeping the announcements in the calendar up to date - a practical mechanism now helps here: as soon as an event has expired, it is moved to the review without editorial intervention. This means that editors don't have to worry about having outdated dates on the page. The import from the external "online collection area", which is made possible via an interface, also makes work easier in order to display selected works of art on the page. The export of dates and exhibitions for the museum portal is also made possible via an interface.

More art, less effort. Our interface to the online collection
The highlights from the individual collection areas - fine art, graphic art, photography, architecture and artist archives - are displayed under the Collections section with in-depth information on the artwork and artist. The import is made possible via an interface programmed by 3pc from the external "online collection area".
We have newly introduced the "Artwork in Focus" format, which allows users to take a closer look at selected works.

Anything goes: Audiowalk app for the exhibition "Anything Goes?"
What's on? The Audiowalk app takes you to important buildings and sites of the 1987 Berlin International Building Exhibition in Kreuzberg and Mitte. Simply start the route, start walking and there is background audio for every architectural highlight. We realised the app together with the museum.
